*Nodes always consider the longest chain to be the correct one and will keep working on extending it.*

\- Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin Whitepaper

The concept of the **longest chain** is central to the network's operation. Nodes always consider **the longest valid chain of proof-of-work to be the correct one**. This principle ensures that the network remains consistent and that all nodes are working towards a common goal.

#### Chain Building Process

* Nodes continuously work to extend the longest chain by adding new blocks.
* If a node discovers a block that is not on the longest chain, it will not receive any rewards for that block, incentivizing nodes to focus on the most valid chain tip.

#### Importance of the Longest Chain Rule

* **Consensus**: The longest chain represents the collective agreement of the majority of hash power on the network.
* **Resource Efficiency**: Minimizes the risk of wasted resources on blocks that are not built upon.

# Agent Instructions: Querying This Documentation

If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter:

```
GET https://hub.bsvblockchain.org/higher-learning/bsv-academy/bitcoin-whitepaper-series/section-5-network-bitcoin-whitepaper/chain-building-and-longest-chain.md?ask=<question>
```

The question should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
