# Business Context and Value Proposition

Historically, blockchain applications have relied on a method known as **global listening** to gather transactions, which involves monitoring the entire blockchain to filter relevant transactions and maintain individual indexes. This approach, while functional, becomes increasingly **cost-prohibitive** and **difficult to scale** as transaction volumes rise.

Overlay services present a paradigm shift by utilizing **Simplified Payment Verification (SPV)** to validate transactions received from clients, allowing users to access transaction data without the burden of indexing all blockchain data.

The value proposition of overlay services is multifaceted. They enable businesses to distribute the demand for immutable data across various services, thereby minimizing waste and allowing for the selection of services tailored to specific needs and costs.

Furthermore, overlay services offer **operational specialization**, as they are designed to cater to specific transaction types or business functions. This specialization is complemented by the ability to implement **private and permissioned capabilities**, which enhance security and control for specialized use cases.
