# The Reserved Opcodes

Some opcodes were never meant to be functional—they're explicitly **reserved** for future use or protocol signaling:

**OP\_RESERVED family:**

* **OP\_RESERVED:** Reserved for future use
* **OP\_RESERVED1/RESERVED2:** Additional reserved opcodes

These opcodes **immediately fail** if executed in a script. Their purpose is to:

* **Reserve opcode space:** Prevent accidental use of these opcode numbers
* **Enable future expansion:** New functionality can be added without conflicting with existing scripts
* **Signal errors:** Scripts containing these opcodes are clearly malformed
