# Scalability and Efficiency for Compliance Systems

**Scalability**—the ability to handle increasing transaction volumes without proportional increases in infrastructure costs—is critical for compliance systems in production environments. As businesses grow, transaction volumes increase, and compliance systems must verify and maintain records for expanding datasets. Traditional full-node blockchain architectures scale poorly: doubling transaction volume requires proportional increases in storage, processing power, and bandwidth.

**SPV's lightweight nature** makes it practical for compliance systems that must process high transaction volumes. Consider the resource implications: A full BSV node stores hundreds of gigabytes of blockchain data and must process every transaction to maintain complete state. An SPV compliance system stores only block headers (growing at \~4.2 MB annually) plus Merkle proofs for relevant transactions (a few hundred bytes each).

For a payment processor handling 100,000 transactions monthly, the storage difference per annum ais dramatic:

* **Full node**: \~500 GB initial + \~60 GB annually for complete blockchain
* **SPV compliance database**: \~4 MB/year for headers + \~17 - 34 MB/year for Merkle proofs (depends on block size) = **21-38 MB/year** (assuming one transaction per block).

The SPV approach requires approximately **0.1% of the storage** while providing cryptographic verification of all transactions. More importantly, this efficiency advantage **increases as transaction volume grows**. Doubling to 200,000 monthly transactions doubles the Merkle proof storage requirement (to \~100 MB), but the block header storage remains constant—there aren't more blocks, just more transactions per block.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://hub.bsvblockchain.org/higher-learning/bsv-academy/how-spv-supports-legal-compliance-in-blockchain-technology/technical-advantages-and-implementation-considerations/scalability-and-efficiency-for-compliance-systems.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
