# Byzantine Fault Tolerance in Practice

Blockchain networks face the **Byzantine Generals Problem**: How do distributed parties reach consensus when some may act maliciously? PoW solves this through computational proof that is:

* **Expensive to produce** (requires significant energy and hardware investment)
* **Easy to verify** (other nodes can instantly check the solution)
* **Impossible to fake** (cryptographic properties ensure authenticity)

This creates **Byzantine Fault Tolerance**—the network maintains integrity even when malicious actors are present. Honest nodes naturally accumulate more computational work over time, making fraudulent histories mathematically infeasible to sustain.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter:

```
GET https://hub.bsvblockchain.org/higher-learning/bsv-academy/proof-of-work-the-only-viable-consensus-mechanism/pows-security-model/byzantine-fault-tolerance-in-practice.md?ask=<question>
```

The question should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
