# BMW VerifyCar: Fighting Odometer Fraud

**The Challenge:** In Germany, [**33% of secondhand cars have manipulated odometers**](https://www.eccnet.eu/taxonomy/term/78), resulting in total economic damage of approximately **6 billion EUR annually**. Buyers can't verify vehicle history, mileage, or maintenance records because data is scattered across insurance providers, repair shops, and banks with no single source of truth.

**The Solution:** [BMW partnered with blockchain developers to create VerifyCar](https://fintechnews.ch/blockchain_bitcoin/bwm-blockchain-automotive/27700/\)), a digital vehicle passport app build on blockchain. Cars equipped with sensors record every interaction—battery changes, filter replacements, service appointments, odometer data—which is stored with hash keys on blockchain. The system provides buyers with transparent, verifiable vehicle history.

**The Results:**

* **Complete vehicle transparency:** Buyers verify odometer readings, service history, and accident reports
* **Fraud prevention:** Immutable records cannot be manipulated by third parties
* **BMW verification:** Data is verified by BMW and stored permanently
